Other missionary sources

This guide was last updated in 2009

There are a number of other sources which will provide some useful background information on your missionary ancestors – and also provide inspiration for further lines of enquiry.

Internet Mission Photography Archive contains more than 6000 historical images taken in China digitised from missionary collections in a number of countries including Britain.

The Ricci 21st Century Roundtable on the History of Christianity in China has information on individuals, archives and bibliographies. Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions, edited by Gerald Anderson, 1998 contains short biographies of 2400 missionaries, many of whom worked in China. SOAS Archives, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London contains the archives of a number of leading British Missionary Societies which worked in China.

These include the surviving archives of the China Inland Mission and the Chefoo School, the London Missionary Society and the Methodist Missionary Society. Any enquiries should be made to docenquiry@soas.ac.uk.

Please note, however, that the archive of Britain’s largest missionary society, the Church Missionary Society (CMS) is held at The University of Birmingham Library. For further information see the CMS Crowther Centre Resources.
