Visit the asylum

This guide was last updated in 2012

Why not pay a visit to the asylum in question?

Many have survived but their uses may have changed – you might easily find that your ancestor’s asylum is now a school or hospital, or has been converted into flats.

Gregg visited the former Devon county lunatic asylum in Exminster – now residential housing – and saw where Selina had spent her final years.

Seeing the size and location of the building, and considering the number of inmates that were there in your ancestor’s day can be very illuminating. It will certainly help you to get the feel of a place – and there might just be a display of old photographs or documents relevant to the building’s history.
