There are plenty of ways of finding out more about the role of unions in the lives of our ancestors.

Many long-vanished unions commissioned official histories, and long out-of-print copies can often be found for a few pounds at ABE Books or search Google Books.

Trade unions are not just about strikes. In the days before the welfare state, they provided an essential safety net for the working class by providing sick pay, pensions, burial grants and even funds to help members emigrate in search a fresh start.

Trade union journals, branch returns to head office, annual reports and other records often provide a record of the assistance given to individual members, as well as a wealth of information about our ancestors’ working lives.
