Indian service

This guide was last updated in 2009

If you think your ancestor may have served in India, there are a number of good places to begin your research.

You can find the records of doctors who served with the armies of the Honourable East India Company before and during the Indian Mutiny and with the Indian Army, 1861-1947 in the India Office Library and Records collection at the British Library. A good starting point is Roll of the Indian Medical Service 1615-1930 by D.G. Crawford (1930).
