Sports presenter, writer and Olympic Games commentator, Clare Balding was born in 1971 in Kingsclere in Hampshire.

Her WDYTYA? Journey sees her explore her roots from the arts scene of 1930s London to the founding and building of New York city. 

Here are five things you may not know about Clare...

1. Gift from the Queen

Clare recalls that her first horse was a Shetland pony named Valkyrie. The horse was a gift from the Queen. Clare’s father is a notable racehorse trainer and worked with hundreds of horses including those owned by Royalty.

2. Galloping success

Before her career as a sports presenter and writer, Clare herself was an amateur jockey and a Champion Lady Rider.

3. OBE

In 2013, Clare was awarded the Order of the British Empire Medal for “services to broadcasting and journalism”. She has also won a BAFTA for Special Award and RTS Presenter of the Year.

4. Head Girl

Clare was Head Girl during her time at Downe House School in Berkshire. Her contemporaries included the comedian and actress, Miranda Hart who is allegedly also a distant cousin. Will Miranda and her shared relatives make an appearance in Clare’s WDYTYA? episode?

5. Literary Acclaim

Clare received praise for her first children’s novel titled The Racehorse Who Wouldn’t Gallop, published in 2016. She also gained acclaim for her autobiography, My Animals and Other Family that charts her early life growing up surrounded by racehorses. In 2012, the book won "Autobiography of the Year" at the National Book Awards.
